# 7 30/30 Challenge

Alpha Xi house painting2

The Alpha Xi Delta house sits on 5th Ave.

across from the Student Union.

It’s special to me:

It’s a magnificent building,

which still stands on Fifth Avenue across from the Student Union.

And I was a member of this sorority,

where I made some beautiful friendships,

Lastly my great uncle, Uncle Ed,

a sheet metal worker,

who also taught in the trade school at East High School

created the lighted crest

which adorns the front of the building.

Pretty cool, huh?

#6 30/30 Challenge

I’m really glad I’m painting 30 paintings in 30 days,

I really regret committing to posting them.

It’s like posting my diary entries for the world to read.

Oh well.

Here’s #6.

When I was a senior in high school,

we moved across the street from the Stutlers;

they lived in this house.

I’ve loved it for a long time.

Today, I painted it.

#4 “Home Sweet Home…Almost”

Fire station painting

“Home Sweet Home…Almost”

I’ve driven by this fire house

probably 1000 times,

but this time I was on a mission:

with camera in tow,

I was looking for “picture-worthy-Huntington-buildings”.

And when I saw the grill and garden…

I knew I would be painting this place.

Painting #3… 30/30 Challenge

Mortimer Place blue painting

I call it Blue House on Mortimer Place.

If you’re not familiar with it,

Mortimer Place is a U-shaped street

entered from 12th Ave,

just one block over from Ritter Park.

Probably eight houses in all,

they steadfastly guard the inside of the U

where one can discover

stone benches, flower beds, and little tables and chairs.

The houses, the narrow, brick street, and the secret garden…

together make up Mortimer Place.

Painting #2 30/30 Challenge

Old Library painting

An example of Beaux Arts Classicism,

Carnegie Public Library in downtown Huntington,

was the first public library in Cabell County.

Andrew Carnegie gave $35,000 towards its construction

in 1902-1903.

Today, the building houses Huntington Junior College, and

the current Cabell County Downtown Library built in 1980

is across the street.

30/30…Painting #1

Simpson Dr painting3

The little fence had me at hello.

As soon as I saw this house

I knew I was painting it.

Built in the 60’s when I was a child,

this house was near Sandy’s house.

She and I played together, rode bikes together,

highlighted one another’s hair…

(we always laughed off the disastrous results)…

Sandy lived in one of these.

The family room’s on the lower level…

Hers had a mosaic rooster made out of beans propped up on the hearth.

The kitchen’s always at the top of the little up-staircase

in the center of the house.

A few years ago I had the good fortune

to be invited to a couple’s UNBELIEVABLE redo of a split level…

The kitchen had been transformed into a sitting room…

and the downstairs family room had a kitchen added…

It was TOTALLY cool.

Painting #2 is tomorrow;)

Painting a Cookie

No it’s not paint.

It’s food coloring…

applied with a brush.

Yes, it’s tricky…

but the results can be adorable and even VERY COOL!

I had an order for painted cookies this weekend.

(Yes I did them before and after my cookie class;)

I snapped a couple of during photos…

and added a little bead for the eye.

Life is good

Life is good.

Yesterday’s cookie class

was so much fun.

I LOVE sharing my cookie art knowledge

with wonderful women.

Each of my students created all of these designs.

They learned SO much in four hours!

My November and December workshops are full;

I have some new classes posted on my WORKSHOPS page.

Cookie Art Makes the News AGAIN!

Let me tell you the story about these cookies…

halloween

I had decided to stop all cookie art.

No more classes, no more orders.

And Tammi Arender called.

Well, she emailed.

Who calls these days?

Tammi Arender, the evening newscaster

for WOWK Channel 13, is quite a force

(in a good way;)

h

She asked if I would do a cookie decorating demo

for her Thursday cooking segment on

the 5:00 evening news.

I said no, but I’ll think about it.

Last fall, photojournalist Brad Rice,

came to my cookie class and created a story

for his weekly TV segment

about my cookie classes to help Maggie.

I survived that.

So I thought about Tammi’s request for a month…

I emailed her back…and said yes.

We taped the segments on Friday.

It was quite a fiasco…

Jeff, the man in charge of editing these segments,

has his work cut out for him.

The two little cookie demos will air Oct 22 and 29th.

She also asked me to teach HER cookie art.

That’s when I scheduled the Sept. class.

Like I said…

She’s quite a force;)
